Richmond range

Heading out into the Richmond range today. Aiming to be at St Arnaud for new year. Don't expect much cell phone coverage through there.

Garmin Connect A very hot day. Started early as I knew it was going to be a long walk today. First part was lovery, gently undulating along the valley. some nice rock features along the way A right turn and followed the Round Hill Creek, walking mostly in the river. Another day of wet feet :) The water was clear and running low so easy enough for crossing or just walking in the river. As the sun appeared above the mountains surrounding the creek the temperature rose, then I left the river as I climbed the saddle. it was a slog to the top and a long way back down the other side, sidling the scree. If you look closely to the right of the sun line you can see the path through the scree. Lower in the decent I came across a mine field of speargrass. These are nasty, appropriately named. They do just spear your legs. Why something evolved to be so defensive I have no idea. It clearly does not want to be eaten. So wh...

Te Araroa - day 2

Garmin Connect Woke early from a vivid dream. I was in the cellar of Corrie Grove the house I grew up in..there was a wooden box full of rats...with scary white eyes and teeth. Then one jumped out the box at me and I woke. Perhaps I have been subconsciously worried about ship rats from captain cook's endeavor. So up and early breakfast and hit the trail just after 8am..good to try to beat the heat of the day. Another hot one ahead. The first 10km was nice and easy. Only about 10am so pressed on. Missed Marsden campsite. Not a good sign for things to come...so figured could make camp for lunch. The pack was definitely getting heavier after 4hrs of tramping. The last couple of kms was a struggle...but made it, setup then off to Cafe for a spot of lunch.. where i am writing this.  Suspect a sleep this afternoon then another early dinner, read a bit more of Outlander. Then off to sleep.

Te Araroa - day 12, 13 & 14

Garmin Connect As I got up and active this morning the were moments of blue skys peeping through the gray cloud which topped the hills around the hut. However as I left Top Wairoa Hut I became nervous for what lay ahead. The clouds were forming and no longer allowing any blue through. As I walked up the hill from the hut I considered returning to see what the weather would do, but instead stopped to put and extra layer beneath my rain coat and my water proof trousers on. I continued up into the clouds, which seemed to rise as I did. After about an hour the sun began showing signs of peeing through. Which gave me confidence to continue. Further up the cloud dominated the landscape providing little visibility, making it more difficult to make out the orange poles or man made cairns. I pressed on and found my way to Mt Ellis, stopping briefly for phone service and some messages. On the way down the cloud cleared and I enjoyed the walk down the valley to the river beneath Hunter Hut. ...
